Media Literacy Student Workshop

On December 16, 2024, the SURE project team organized a new event in the C.A.R.E. campaign: a media literacy student workshop entitled “Educating future teachers on media literacy using practical examples of fake news about Ukrainian refugees.” This train-the-trainer tactic aimed to equip future teachers with the tools neccesary to teach media literacy.

As such, Arintina Bobiț and Ramon Tănăsie introduced first-year undergraduate students at the West University of Timisoara to the concepts of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news. The students were asked to read a series of online articles about Ukrainian refugees in Romania and to evaluate the credibility of these online sources. The students learned how to identify fake news and tested a series of fact-checking tools. The workshop concluded with a discussion of the influence of such news on Romanian society.

This workshop is the first of several such training events. The next one will take place on January 16, 2025.
